INCREASED RESOLUTION OF AMPLICON-BASED TAXONOMIC IDENTIFICATION

Instead of classifying environmental DNA (eDNA) of bacteria to species based on their 16S rRNA sequences, a comparison of public gene sequences can reveal which gene most accurately delineates species within a genus.

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE GENES IN PIG MANURE

The presence of antimicrobial resistance at pig farms can be probed by mapping eDNA sequences against public databases of antimicrobial resistance genes (AMRs). This mapping of reads against known genes also reveals the relative abundance of different AMRs within each pig farm.
